Our History
The Episcopal Youth and Children’s Services Board is the
offspring of the Episcopal Home for Girls, a Savannah orphanage
established in the early 1800s by 15 women from Episcopal
Churches in that city.
In the early 1960s, the orphanage was closed since it no longer
met the increasing needs and challenges of the time. The proceeds from the sale of the property were placed in
a trust by the board of the Home and The Episcopal Youth and
Children’s Services was established. The new EYCS Board expanded
its mandate to include assisting any youth of the diocese with
education and medical grants where needed. Camp scholarships
were added as the diocesan summer camp program became more
established.
Episcopal Youth & Children Services is a unique organization in
the Episcopal Church. As of this writing, the EYCS Trust has
provided over $1,000,000 in college scholarships for well over
1,000 youth of the diocese. Additionally, the board has provided
hundreds of children with braces and glasses, improving their
quality of life and self-esteem.
How
We Raise Funds
Under our diocesan canon law, the EYCS may conduct an annual
Thanksgiving Appeal. With the Bishop’s consent, every person on
the diocesan mailing list receives a personal letter. Each
parish or mission receives a packet of information about our
education scholarship, and the medical and dental assistance
that we provide.
The Thanksgiving offering covers about half of what we disburse
each year. Other monies come from the Anson Dodge Trust and the
Stewart Huston Charitable Trust, as well as by way of parish and
mission organizations such as the ECW (Episcopal Church Women),
Men’s Clubs, memorials and individual contributions.
